With the gas prices nearing four dollars a gallon. And the economy going down. I get calls every once in a while. They want me to just look at a car to see if its something that I can fix and how much it will be. And if its not too much , then they will decide if they want me to fix it or not. Hello !!!! Have you seen the prices of gas lately !!! You just want me to look!!! If its local. I dont have a problem with just looking. But if its any more then 5 or 10 minutes away. I am hesident in going that far just to look. What do other dent techs do in this situation?? I dont want to lose out on work out there. But there has got to be a compromise some where. I try to have them come to me if at all possible. This is becoming more of an issue. What do you do ??

your a dent guy , if your a good tech , a 100.00 an hour is a pretty good damn hourly rate! Gas prices are not going down any time soon, so price yourself at that rate. Start charging 20.00 for just showing up , that will get rid of the people looking to get sh## done that look ‘d like it got hit by the space shuttle for nothing!! Good luck , Sincerly 15 yaer tech !

Start charging for estimates that you have to drive to over a certain milage (say 10 miles or more)–this will clear out the idiots wanting you to drive 50 mile to look at frankendent that the bodyshop already quoted them a grand for, Or Ask them to come meet you a block from your place and see if they are still as quick to want your services–some people may be but it will seperate the sheep from the goats.

You should try and get the customer to come to you, or even half way depending on how serious you figure he/she may be about repairing the damage they want you to look at. If you try to charge for estimates they might try someone who does’nt charge a estimate fee ,which most dent guys and companies do now.
